Features
Ice caves can generate:
- Lava lakes
- Water springs
- Lava springs
- Amethyst geodes
- Monster rooms (dungeons)
- Diorite
- Andesite
- Tuff
- Sand disks
- Clay disks
- Gravel disks
Music
Ice caves reuse the sulfur caves music.
Ice Crystal
Ice Crystals are 0.4375 × 0.625 blocks in size, have 1.5 hardness and 1.5 blast resistance, and emit a light level of 4.
Ice Crystals always drop when broken by hand, any tool, or a piston.
Ice crystals show up as #A0A0FF “Ice” on a map. When placed under a note block, they make the “Chime” instrument sound.
Icicle
Icicles are the same size as other speleothem-like blocks, and have 0.5 hardness and 0.5 blast resistance.
Icicles always drop when broken by hand, any tool, or a piston.
Ice crystals show up as #6699D8 “Light Blue” on a map. When placed under a note block, they make the “Chime” instrument sound.
Icicles can only be placed vertically up or down, not in any direction. An icicle stalagmite and stalactite facing each other will not merge their tips together.
When an icicle is exposed to a block light level of 5 or greater, is 1 or 2 blocks above a magma block, or is in the Nether, it starts to melt:
- If the tip is random ticked, it falls if the block below is air
- If the middle is random ticked, it falls
- If the base is random ticked, it does not fall, but it does not grow as usual
Frostbite
Frostbites are the same size, attack damage, armor, follow range, and reinforcements chance as regular zombies. However, they have 24 health instead of 20, and 0.21 movement speed instead of 0.23.
Spawning
Frostbites spawn naturally in the following biomes:
| Biome | Pack Size | Weight | Chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ice Caves | 4 | 50 | 9.615% |
| Frozen Peaks | 4 | 25 | 4.630% |
| Ice Spikes | 4 | 25 | 4.630% |
| Frozen River | 4 | 25 | 4.621% |
| Deep Frozen Ocean | 4 | 25 | 4.587% |
| Frozen Ocean | 4 | 25 | 4.587% |
| Jagged Peaks | 4 | 10 | 1.905% |
| Snowy Plains | 4 | 10 | 1.905% |
| Snowy Slopes | 4 | 10 | 1.905% |
A Zombie or Husk inside powder snow for 15 seconds (same duration as Stray conversion) will convert to a Frostbite.
Frostbites have a 25% chance to spawn with an Ice Ball in hand.
Drops
A Frostbite drops 0-2 rotten flesh (up to 0-5 with Looting III):

AI
If a Frostbite is holding an Ice Ball, it alternates between ranged and melee attacks:
- It does ranged attacks until the player is less than 3 blocks away (though it will only throw Ice Balls if the player is within 16 blocks)
- Then, it does melee attacks until either the player is more than 5 blocks away or the Frostbite cannot pathfind to the player
Melee Attack
Frostbites perform a melee attack once every 1.5 seconds instead of once every second like other zombies. A Frostbite melee attack inflicts Freezing for 3 seconds.
Ranged Attack
Frostbites throw an Ice Ball once every 3 seconds on Easy, once every 1-2 seconds on Normal, and once every 0.75-1.5 seconds on Hard. Frostbites throw Ice Balls with the same power and uncertainty as Snow Golems throwing snowballs.
Unlike Snow Golems, Frostbites do not stop moving when throwing Ice Balls.
Villagers killed by an Ice Ball thrown by a Frostbite will zombify.
Freezing
A Potion of Freezing lasts for 45 seconds. It can be extended to last 1:30. Higher levels of Freezing do not provide any additional effects.
The Freezing effect causes entities (not just players) to start freezing as if they were in powder snow. Entities take 7 seconds to fully freeze, freezing twice as fast if they are also in powder snow. Once fully frozen, an entity takes 1.5 freezing damage (up from the 1 damage powder snow normally does) every 2 seconds (based on a two-second timer starting when the entity is created or loaded).
Freezing entities are gradually slowed and have their jump height reduced, just like if they were in powder snow. When an entity gains the Freezing effect, it does not slow down like an entity entering a powder snow block, however.
Players do not take any damage from Freezing if the freeze_damage gamerule is enabled. Mobs that are weak to freezing damage, such as Blazes, will take extra Freezing damage. Mobs with Freezing do not take extra damage from other sources.
Once an entity no longer has the Freezing effect and is no longer in powder snow, it takes 3.5 seconds for the entity to fully thaw, taking less time if the entity was not completely frozen.
Mobs wearing leather armor, regular Skeletons, and Sulfur Cubes with an absorbed block do not freeze. If a mob was freezing, then puts on leather armor, or a Sulfur Cube absorbs a block, it starts thawing.
Skeletons do not convert to Strays if they have the Freezing effect. Skeletons still must be inside a powder snow block.
Ice Ball
Ice Balls stack to 16 items. Players and dispensers throw Ice Balls with the same power and uncertainty as snowballs.
Ice Balls are 0.25 × 0.25 blocks in size. They deal ceil(1.395 * velocity) damage.
Villagers
Master Fletcher villagers can now sell either regular or extended Freezing arrows.
Villagers flee from Frostbites until they are 8 blocks away.
Wandering Trader
Added new Wandering Trader trades:
| Buy | Sell | Stock |
|---|---|---|
| 2 Emerald | Ice Crystal | 5 |
| Emerald | 2 Icicles | 5 |
World Generation
All biomes no longer generate blobs of gravel (the ore_gravel feature). They can still generate gravel disks.
Fixed a bug where some mushroom features required a lower light level, even if the mushroom is placed on mycelium, podzol, or nylium, fixing MC-312198 .
Misc
Pets no longer look at or teleport to their owner’s coordinates if their owner is in a different dimension, fixing MC-303468 .
Restrictions Screen
Fixed the Restrictions Screen stating that no restrictions are present when the user can only receive messages from friends.
